Histiophryne bougainvilli[1] es un pez que pertenece a la familia Antennariidae.[2] Vive en las aguas de Queensland, Nueva Gales del Sur y Australia Occidental. Se estima que existen unos 40 especímenes en museos. Esta especie fue descrita por primera vez en 1837, por el zoólogo francés Achille Valenciennes.[3]
Estos peces poseen tres espinas dorsales, además de una especie de bolsillo que está entre el cuerpo y la cola que sirve para proteger los huevos. Carecen de señuelos y de pedúnculos caudales.[4]
